Ridely Scott out done himself. This isn't some quest for some farm boy to send home to momma. This is about survival. "It's about the man next to you". Eric Bana would kick Tom Hanks ass any day. You got RPGs flying all over the place, Tom Sizemore steering the humvee after getting shot in the neck. While filming, Scott had the soldiers running down the street without knowing where the explosions would be coming from so the scenes are as real as them come. And then theres the operating scene with Josh Hartnett. Graphic. I admit, there were some tears when Smith (saved Twombly) died. Then theres the two snipers who volunteer to go in and secure the crash knowing almost certain death awaits. Black Hawk Down has it all: great acting, non-stop action, heart wrenched emotions and top off with a sick soundtrack. And I can't forget the touching ending of the soldier reading a letter to his wife and kids. Again tears. Nobody asks to be a hero, it just sometimes turns out that way. Hoo-ah. |

SPR has plenty of faults, trust me. It's core story--involving the hunt for the fourth Ryan brother who's other three siblings have been KIA, is really lame and cheesy, but the film is bookended by two of the most amazingly shot war scenes ever. The sequence of D-Day and the storming of Omaha beach was ground breaking when it came out and still holds up today. It is really graphic and hard to watch and from the testimony of people who were actually at the beaches of Normandy, very accurate. Spielberg and his DP, Kanusz Kaminski, removed light filters, slowed the film speed and tampered with their cameras to achieve the lens flares and aesthetic look that many directors have copied for action sequences since. Ridley Scott's movie is OKAY as far as a document of combat in Somalia, but it isn't a very good movie. Eric Bana is AMAZING in everything he does, but that's about all Black Hawk Down has to offer. Read the book, it's much more informative and heartbreaking. |
