The 34-32 win by Appalachian State over Michigan at Michigan is definitely the biggest upset in sports history. I mean I had never even heard of Appalachian state and they go ahead and knock off the number 5 team in the country. What makes the win most impressive is that they did it on the road, it one of the most intimidating stadiums in the country, with diehard wolverine fans screaming and yelling. Appalachian state shook the college football universe with their win, breaking hearts, sending the rankings into a scramble and probably costing a coach his job, definitely the biggest upset of all time.

The title of biggest sports upset of all time goes to the 1980 US Olympic Hockey team over the Soviet Union in Lake Placid NY. This game so so significant in a multitude of ways. To begin there was more to the game than just two teams meeting on the ice. It was about two countries that were involved in a heated standoff against one another. Next, the game was in actuality professionals (from the Soviet Union) being challenged by a bunch of college kids (from the US). The US team didnt have one pro on its roster. Witht the win the US team not only completed the biggest sports upset of all time, but lifted a nation with its efforts.

When Billie Jean King won over Bobby Riggs in 1973. The match garnered huge publicity. In front of 30,492 spectators and a worldwide television audience estimated at 50 million people in 37 countries, King beat Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. The match is considered a very significant event in developing greater recognition and respect for women's tennis. This is what let women gain confidence and believe they could compete against men in sports.
