SHOULD YOU EVER MAKE AN ABRUPT STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR?
Dagman`s Argument
So here is the question. It is 9:00 a.m and you are walking around midtown manhattan. Crowds of people are everyone, walking in orderly fashion down the sidewalk as they rush to get to work on time, as they do every other day of the year. Then all of a sudden someone, obviously with no important agenda and not from the area, stops in the middle of the line and starts looking around or up in the air. This immediately creates a problem as everyone behind the person either runs directly into each other or if the people behind the mysterious stopper have extremely quick reflexes and the utmost flexibility they can perhaps exert tremendous effort to avoid the crash. A good analogy would be if you were driving down the highway at about 60 miles an hour keeping up with traffic and then all of a sudden yanked up the emergency brake. You would have to Jeff Gordon to avoid an accident there. These are just things that you cant do. I say, if someone does either of these things you have every right to reprimand them and possibly even trample them over on purpose. Either action would not be rude (though maybe a little mean). In case you were wondering, the correct procedure in this situation would have been to move toward the buildings where you could clearly stop and take as long as you want to think and ponder. You just cant stop in the middle of flowing traffic. Period.
There is nothing wrong with having to stop without warning when walking on the busy streets of Manhatten. Why should you get punished for suddenly stopping when there is no real harm in doing so. It is not going to kill anyone If you just simply stop to tie your shoe or to take a look at something interesting. Unlike a car that ubruptly shouldn't stop for reasons of hurting people, walking is not the same as driving. It is a free country, therefore If I am walking down a street in Manhatten and simply feel like looking up for no reason I have the right to do that. It would be rude to say anything or to trample on someone for doing that. I am pretty sure there are no signs stating that when you are walking with the flow of traffic, which even sounds ridiculous, that you have to keep up without stopping or interupting the flow. So why correct someone on doing it when obviously it's not a law, just a standard to make things more convenient for those fast walkers.
