SHOULD ERRORS BE TRACKED AND CONSIDERED A STAT IN MLB?

Errors are vital because of the fact that they are inextricably linked to a variety of other statistics within the game. Thus, removing errors would have a 'domino' effect on the credibility of those other stats.
For example, the concept of ERA (earned-run average) takes into consideration the differentiation between an EARNED run and an UNEARNED run. Thus, the public perception of the statistic would be rendered forever altered if errors were removed from the game's record books. A pitcher who plays behind a particularly porous or poor fielding/throwing team should not be unjustly penalized.
Though an error is just part of the equation for measuring defensive competence, it is a necessary aspect. If one were to remove errors, it would make the concept of defensive analysis MORE unclear. Though errors should be just part of the equation in determining defensive abilities, along with such tools as range factor, ultimate zone rating and other defensive metrics, they are a vital part of that equation.
Errors, though not without their inherent flaws, are nonetheless an indicator of a degree of defensive ability - and that would be lost if the stat was eliminated.

We are talking about professional athletes. These are people who live sleep and eat baseball and have done so since the day they were born. An infielder has probably taken millions of ground balls in his lifetime. An outfielder millions of fly balls. If they can not come up with the play then obviously something went wrong, maybe a bad bounce, a glaring sun.

Plus how can we take a hit away from a batter (and an earned run away from a pitcher) while not at the same time giving a hit to hitter (and an earned run to a pitcher) when someone makes a ridiculous play. I am talking about A-rod laying out to snag a ball down the third base line and then throwing a close line to beat the runner by half a step. These are plays that 99% of the time will not get made. If we are taking away a hit for a play that will get made 99% why wouldn't we also give a hit to the person who unfortunately was thrown out on a play that any other time would have landed him on first base? It just doesn't make sense.

If there were no errors in baseball then the miraculous plays would cancel out the bonehead plays and honest and fair ERA and batting average statistics would result.

Also lets not forget that determining whether an error has occurred is completely subjective. This completely undermines the validity of the statistic. One person would declare an error where another would find none.

Furthermore the better players in the league are penalized by the error statistic. Good players have broader range and are able to get to more balls then sucky players. Therefore they are going to be around the ball more and get more leather on the glove in hard to make plays. By reaching the ball (as opposed to your average Joe who wouldn't even make an attempt at the ball) a great baseball player will be given more errors for his extraordinary efforts.

No other sport has such a stupid statistic. Imagine taking a touchdown away if the corner back fell on the play. Ha.
